Frequently Asked Questions — eBay Break-Even Pricing
Calculate minimum floor prices and target profit margins
How is the minimum break-even selling price calculated for eBay?▼
The break-even price is the exact sale amount needed to cover COGS, outbound shipping, fixed per-order fees, FVF commission, and ad fees with zero net profit. Formula: (COGS + Shipping + Per-Order Fee) ÷ (1 − FVF% − AdRate%).
What happens if the denominator in the break-even formula is zero or negative?▼
If combined percentage fees (FVF % + Promoted Ad Rate % + Target Margin %) equal or exceed 100%, the denominator becomes zero or negative. In this case, no profitable selling price is possible regardless of price level.
How does the Reverse Mode (Market Price Margin) work?▼
Reverse Mode allows you to enter a competitive market price and immediately calculates the achievable dollar profit and margin % after deducting all eBay fees and product costs.
Does the referral/FVF base include buyer shipping?▼
Yes, eBay calculates FVF on the total transaction amount (item price + buyer shipping). This calculator assumes for simplicity that the selling price covers the total item + shipping value, and notes the caveat.
How can I lower my break-even selling price on eBay?▼
You can lower your minimum price floor by negotiating lower supplier COGS, optimizing shipping packaging, subscribing to an eBay Store for lower FVF rates, or lowering your Promoted Listings ad rate.
